Aligning Consciousness

Ch 2Verse 59
Adhyāya 2 Shloka 59

विषया विनिवर्तन्ते निराहारस्य देहिन: | रसवर्जं रसोऽप्यस्य परं दृष्ट्वा निवर्तते || ५९ ||

viṣayā vinivartante nirāhārasya dehinaḥ | rasa-varjaṃ raso 'py asya paraṃ dṛṣṭvā nivartate || 59 ||

"The embodied soul may be restricted from sense enjoyment, though the taste for sense objects remains. But, ceasing such engagements by experiencing a higher taste, he is fixed in consciousness."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna addresses the mechanics of self-control. A person can physically restrict their body from consuming sense objects (nirāhārasya dehinaḥ)—like fasting, taking a vow of silence, or living in isolation. The objects turn away (viṣayā vinivartante). However, Krishna points out a massive flaw in this forced restriction: the 'Rasa' (the lingering taste, craving, or internal desire) remains (rasa-varjaṃ). This internal craving only permanently ceases (nivartate) when the soul experiences something far superior (paraṃ dṛṣṭvā).
