Aligning Consciousness

Ch 2Verse 58
Adhyāya 2 Shloka 58

यदा संहरते चायं कूर्मोऽङ्गानीव सर्वश: | इन्द्रियाणीन्द्रियार्थेभ्यस्तस्य प्रज्ञा प्रतिष्ठिता || ५८ ||

yadā saṃharate cāyaṃ kūrmo 'ṅgānīva sarvaśaḥ | indriyāṇīndriyārthebhyas tasya prajñā pratiṣṭhitā || 58 ||

"One who is able to withdraw his senses from sense objects, as the tortoise draws its limbs within the shell, is firmly fixed in perfect consciousness."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna uses one of the most vivid and practical metaphors in the Gita. He compares the sage to a tortoise (kūrmaḥ). Just as a tortoise can immediately draw all its limbs (aṅgānīva) inside its shell from all sides (sarvaśaḥ) at the approach of danger, the yogi can withdraw their senses (indriyāṇī) from the objects of the senses (indriyārthebhyaḥ) at will. When a person has mastered this ability (yadā saṃharate), their wisdom is steady and firmly fixed.
