Adhyāya 2 Shloka 50

बुद्धियुक्तो जहातीह उभे सुकृतदुष्कृते | तस्माद्योगाय युज्यस्व योग: कर्मसु कौशलम् || ५० ||

buddhi-yukto jahātīha ubhe sukṛta-duṣkṛte | tasmād yogāya yujyasva yogaḥ karmasu kauśalam || 50 ||

"A man engaged in devotional service (Buddhi Yoga) rids himself of both good and bad actions even in this life. Therefore strive for yoga, O Arjuna, which is the art of all work."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

This verse contains the second great definition of Yoga in the Gita. Krishna says that a person united with purified intellect (buddhi-yukto) casts off both good deeds (sukṛta) and bad deeds (duṣkṛte) in this very life (iha). He then issues a command: 'tasmād yogāya yujyasva' (therefore, engage in Yoga). He concludes with the legendary maxim: 'yogaḥ karmasu kauśalam'—Yoga is skill in action.
