Aligning Consciousness

Ch 2Verse 49
Adhyāya 2 Shloka 49

दूरेण ह्यवरं कर्म बुद्धियोगाद्धनञ्जय | बुद्धौ शरणमन्विच्छ कृपणा: फलहेतव: || ४९ ||

dūreṇa hy avaraṃ karma buddhi-yogād dhanañjaya | buddhau śaraṇam anviccha kṛpaṇāḥ phala-hetavaḥ || 49 ||

"O Dhananjaya, keep all abominable activities far distant by buddhi-yoga, and in that consciousness surrender unto the Lord. Those who want to enjoy the fruits of their work are misers."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna instructs Arjuna to cast away inferior, result-driven actions (avaraṃ karma) and take refuge purely in the intellect of Yoga (buddhau śaraṇam anviccha). He then issues a cutting psychological diagnosis: 'kṛpaṇāḥ phala-hetavaḥ'—those who are motivated by the fruits of their action are 'Kripana' (misers or wretched people).
