योगस्थ: कुरु कर्माणि सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा धनञ्जय | सिद्ध्यसिद्ध्यो: समो भूत्वा समत्वं योग उच्यते || ४८ ||

yoga-sthaḥ kuru karmāṇi saṅgaṃ tyaktvā dhanañjaya | siddhy-asiddhyoḥ samo bhūtvā samatvaṃ yoga ucyate || 48 ||

"Perform your duty equipoised, O Arjuna, abandoning all attachment to success or failure. Such equanimity is called yoga."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

If Verse 47 was the rule, Verse 48 is the definition. Krishna instructs Arjuna to perform his actions (kuru karmāṇi) while situated in Yoga (yoga-sthaḥ). How does one situate themselves in Yoga? By abandoning attachment (saṅgaṃ tyaktvā) and becoming perfectly equal (samo bhūtvā) to both success (siddhi) and failure (asiddhyoḥ). Krishna then provides the ultimate, concise definition of the word: 'samatvaṃ yoga ucyate' (Equanimity is called Yoga).
