"You have a right to perform your prescribed duty, but you are not entitled to the fruits of action. Never consider yourself the cause of the results of your activities, and never be attached to not doing your duty."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

This is the Magna Carta of the Bhagavad Gita—the absolute core of Karma Yoga. Krishna delivers four uncompromising rules for action in the material world: 1. **karmaṇy evādhikāras te:** Your only authority/right (adhikāra) is to perform the action itself. 2. **mā phaleṣu kadācana:** You NEVER (kadācana) have a right to the fruits/results of the action. 3. **mā karma-phala-hetur bhūr:** Do not make the fruit of the action your motivation for acting. 4. **mā te saṅgo 'stv akarmaṇi:** Do not let this detachment lead you to innaction (akarmaṇi).
