Ch 2Verse 46
Adhyāya 2 Shloka 46

यावानर्थ उदपाने सर्वत: सम्प्लुतोदके | तावान्सर्वेषु वेदेषु ब्राह्मणस्य विजानत: || ४६ ||

yāvān artha udapāne sarvataḥ samplutodake | tāvān sarveṣu vedeṣu brāhmaṇasya vijānataḥ || 46 ||

"All purposes served by a small well can at once be served by a great reservoir of water. Similarly, all the purposes of the Vedas can be served to one who knows the purpose behind them."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

To clarify his shocking statement about transcending the Vedas in the previous verse, Krishna provides a beautiful analogy. If you have access to a massive, overflowing lake or a flood of fresh water (samplutodake), a small, limited well (udapāne) becomes practically unnecessary. You can still use the well, but all the purposes of the well are already contained in the lake. Similarly, a self-realized soul (brāhmaṇasya vijānataḥ) who has directly experienced the Absolute Truth has automatically achieved all the various rewards promised by the specific rituals of the Vedas.
