Ch 2Verse 37
Adhyāya 2 Shloka 37

हतो वा प्राप्स्यसि स्वर्गं जित्वा वा भोक्ष्यसे महीम् | तस्मादुत्तिष्ठ कौन्तेय युद्धाय कृतनिश्चय: || ३७ ||

hato vā prāpsyasi svargaṃ jitvā vā bhokṣyase mahīm | tasmād uttiṣṭha kaunteya yuddhāya kṛta-niścayaḥ || 37 ||

"O son of Kunti, either you will be killed on the battlefield and attain the heavenly planets, or you will conquer and enjoy the earthly kingdom. Therefore, get up with determination and fight."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna completely flips Arjuna's logic from Chapter 1. Arjuna had stated (in verse 6) that he didn't know which was worse: winning or losing. It was a 'lose-lose' scenario. Krishna presents the exact opposite: a 'Win-Win' scenario. If Arjuna dies (hato vā), he dies a martyr executing his Dharma and goes to heaven (prāpsyasi svargaṃ). If he wins (jitvā vā), he gets to enjoy the earth (bhokṣyase mahīm). With both outcomes yielding a positive result, the only logical conclusion is: 'tasmād uttiṣṭha' (therefore, get up) with firm determination (kṛta-niścayaḥ) to fight.
