Ch 2Verse 38
Adhyāya 2 Shloka 38

सुखदु:खे समे कृत्वा लाभालाभौ जयाजयौ | ततो युद्धाय युज्यस्व नैवं पापमवाप्स्यसि || ३८ ||

sukha-duḥkhe same kṛtvā lābhālābhau jayājayau | tato yuddhāya yujyasva naivaṃ pāpam avāpsyasi || 38 ||

"Do thou fight for the sake of fighting, without considering happiness or distress, loss or gain, victory or defeat—and by so doing you shall never incur sin."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

This verse is the monumental bridge between worldly action and spiritual liberation. Krishna drops the promises of Heaven and Earth from the previous verse. He tells Arjuna to make his mind equal (same kṛtvā) toward happiness and distress (sukha-duḥkhe), loss and gain (lābhālābhau), and victory and defeat (jayājayau). Having achieved this perfect equanimity, he commands: 'then engage in the battle' (tato yuddhāya yujyasva). By acting in this state of mind, he will absolutely never incur sin (naivaṃ pāpam avāpsyasi).
