Ch 2Verse 36
Adhyāya 2 Shloka 36

"Your enemies will describe you with many unkind words and scorn your ability. What could be more painful for you?"

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna lands the final blow in his social/psychological argument. He moves from what Arjuna's peers (the great generals) will think, to what his actual enemies (ahitaḥ) will say. They won't just think he's a coward; they will actively mock him, using unspeakable/unkind words (avācya-vādāṃś) to deride his strength and competence (sāmarthyaṃ). Krishna concludes with a penetrating rhetorical question: 'For a warrior like you, what could possibly be more painful (duḥkhataraṃ) than that?'
