Ch 2Verse 35
Adhyāya 2 Shloka 35

भयाद्रणादुपरतं मंस्यन्ते त्वां महारथा: | येषां च त्वं बहुमतो भूत्वा यास्यसि लाघवम् || ३५ ||

bhayād raṇād uparataṃ maṃsyante tvāṃ mahārathāḥ | yeṣāṃ ca tvaṃ bahu-mato bhūtvā yāsyasi lāghavam || 35 ||

"The great generals who have highly esteemed your name and honor will think that you have left the battlefield out of fear only, and thus they will consider you insignificant."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna dismantles Arjuna's illusion of 'noble compassion.' Arjuna thinks he is stepping down because he is too spiritual and loving to kill. Krishna delivers a harsh reality check: the other great warriors (mahārathāḥ) will not see it that way. They will conclude that he fled the battlefield purely out of fear (bhayād). Those who previously held him in high esteem (bahu-mato) will now look at him as lightweight and insignificant (lāghavam).
