Ch 2Verse 33
Adhyāya 2 Shloka 33

अथ चेत्त्वमिमं धर्म्यं सङ्ग्रामं न करिष्यसि | तत: स्वधर्मं कीर्तिं च हित्वा पापमवाप्स्यसि || ३३ ||

atha cet tvam imaṃ dharmyaṃ saṅgrāmaṃ na kariṣyasi | tataḥ sva-dharmaṃ kīrtiṃ ca hitvā pāpam avāpsyasi || 33 ||

"If, however, you do not perform your religious duty of fighting, then you will certainly incur sins for neglecting your duties and thus lose your reputation as a fighter."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna concludes his 'Sva-Dharma' argument by showing the negative consequences of retreat. If Arjuna refuses to engage in this righteous war (dharmyaṃ saṅgrāmaṃ), the result will be exactly what Arjuna was trying to avoid: sin. By abandoning his post, he will cast aside his personal duty (sva-dharmaṃ) and his hard-earned reputation (kīrtiṃ), and as a direct result, he will acquire sin (pāpam avāpsyasi).
