Ch 2Verse 31
Adhyāya 2 Shloka 31

स्वधर्ममपि चावेक्ष्य न विकम्पितुमर्हसि | धर्म्याद्धि युद्धाच्छ्रेयोऽन्यत्क्षत्रियस्य न विद्यते || ३१ ||

sva-dharmam api cāvekṣya na vikampitum arhasi | dharmyād dhi yuddhāc chreyo 'nyat kṣatriyasya na vidyate || 31 ||

"Considering your specific duty as a Kshatriya, you should know that there is no better engagement for you than fighting on religious principles; and so there is no need for hesitation."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

This is a major pivot. Having spent 20 verses explaining the eternal soul, Krishna grounds the philosophy in reality. He introduces 'Sva-Dharma' (personal duty based on one's nature). Arjuna is a Kshatriya (a warrior/administrator). Krishna tells him that looking strictly at his Sva-Dharma, he has no right to tremble or hesitate (na vikampitum arhasi). For a warrior, there is no greater good (śreyas) than a righteous war (dharmyād yuddhāc).
