Ch 2Verse 30
Adhyāya 2 Shloka 30

देही नित्यमवध्योऽयं देहे सर्वस्य भारत | तस्मात्सर्वाणि भूतानि न त्वं शोचितुमर्हसि || ३० ||

dehī nityam avadhyo 'yaṃ dehe sarvasya bhārata | tasmāt sarvāṇi bhūtāni na tvaṃ śocitum arhasi || 30 ||

"O descendant of Bharata, he who dwells in the body can never be slain. Therefore you need not grieve for any living being."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

This verse concludes Krishna's metaphysical discourse on the Soul (Sankhya philosophy). He issues a final, summarizing statement: The 'Dehī' (the indweller/soul) situated within the 'Dehe' (the body) of 'Sarvasya' (absolutely everyone) is 'Nityam Avadhyo' (eternally indestructible). He draws the final logical conclusion (tasmāt/therefore): because the core of every single being is immortal, lamenting for any creature (sarvāṇi bhūtāni) is fundamentally irrational.
