Ch 2Verse 2
Adhyāya 2 Shloka 2

श्रीभगवानुवाच | कुतस्त्वा कश्मलमिदं विषमे समुपस्थितम् | अनार्यजुष्टमस्वर्ग्यमकीर्तिकरमर्जुन || २ ||

śrī-bhagavān uvāca | kutas tvā kaśmalam idaṃ viṣame samupasthitam | anārya-juṣṭam asvargyam akīrti-karam arjuna || 2 ||

"The Supreme Lord said: O Arjuna, how has this delusion (impurity) come upon you in this hour of peril? It is not practiced by honorable men, it does not lead to higher realms, and it brings only infamy."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Arjuna has collapsed in the chariot, expecting sympathy or validation for his 'noble' pacifism. Instead, Krishna delivers a sharp, uncompromising rebuke. He does not console Arjuna; he challenges him. Krishna calls Arjuna's grief 'kaśmalam' (filth/impurity) and questions its origin at such a critical moment ('viṣame'). He completely dismantles Arjuna's previous arguments, stating that his behavior is un-Aryan (ignoble), spiritually useless (asvargyam), and socially disgraceful (akīrti-karam).
