nāsato vidyate bhāvo nābhāvo vidyate sataḥ | ubhayor api dṛṣṭo 'ntas tv anayos tattva-darśibhiḥ || 16 ||

"Those who are seers of the truth have concluded that of the nonexistent (the material body) there is no endurance and of the eternal (the soul) there is no change."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

This is one of the most intellectually rigorous verses in the Gita, laying down the fundamental epistemology of Advaita Vedanta. Krishna defines the boundary between the Real (Sat) and the Unreal (Asat). He states: that which is 'Asat' (unreal/temporary) has no permanent existence (bhāvo). That which is 'Sat' (real/eternal) has no non-existence (abhāvo). The seers of Truth (tattva-darśibhiḥ) have observed the ultimate nature (antaḥ) of both.
