Ch 18Verse 60
Adhyāya 18 Shloka 60

स्वभावजेन कौन्तेय निबद्धः स्वेन कर्मणा | कर्तुं नेच्छसि यन्मोहात्करिष्यस्यवशोऽपि तत् || ६० ||

svabhāva-jena kaunteya nibaddhaḥ svena karmaṇā | kartuṁ necchasi yan mohāt kariṣyasy avaśo 'pi tat || 60 ||

"Under illusion you are now declining to act according to My direction. But, compelled by the work born of your own nature, you will act all the same, O son of Kuntī."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna hammers the point home. He tells Arjuna that he is tightly bound (nibaddhaḥ) by his own past karma and the inherent qualities born of his own nature (svabhāva-jena svena karmaṇā). Therefore, what Arjuna is currently refusing to do out of sheer illusion and emotional confusion (kartuṁ necchasi yan mohāt), he will ultimately be forced to do anyway, helplessly acting under compulsion (kariṣyasy avaśo 'pi tat).
