Aligning Consciousness

Ch 18Verse 58
Adhyāya 18 Shloka 58

मच्चित्तः सर्वदुर्गाणि मत्प्रसादात्तरिष्यसि | अथ चेत्त्वमहङ्कारान्न श्रोष्यसि विनङ्क्ष्यसि || ५८ ||

mac-cittaḥ sarva-durgāṇi mat-prasādāt tariṣyasi | atha cet tvam ahaṅkārān na śroṣyasi vinaṅkṣyasi || 58 ||

"If you become conscious of Me, you will pass over all the obstacles of conditioned life by My grace. If, however, you do not work in such consciousness but act through false ego, not hearing Me, you will be lost."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna presents the ultimate ultimatum of the Gita. If Arjuna keeps his consciousness fixed on Him (mac-cittaḥ), he will successfully cross over all terrifying obstacles and insurmountable difficulties (sarva-durgāṇi) entirely by Krishna's grace (mat-prasādāt). However (atha cet), if Arjuna acts out of false ego and stubborn pride (ahaṅkārān) and refuses to listen to this divine instruction (na śroṣyasi), he will be utterly destroyed and lost (vinaṅkṣyasi).
