ब्राह्मणक्षत्रियविशां शूद्राणां च परन्तप | कर्माणि प्रविभक्तानि स्वभावप्रभवैर्गुणैः || ४१ ||

brāhmaṇa-kṣatriya-viśāṁ śūdrāṇāṁ ca parantapa | karmāṇi pravibhaktāni svabhāva-prabhavair guṇaiḥ || 41 ||

"Brāhmaṇas, kṣatriyas, vaiśyas and śūdras are distinguished by the qualities born of their own natures in accordance with the material modes, O chastiser of the enemy."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Having established that the three modes of nature (gunas) govern everything in the material world, Krishna applies this framework to human society. He names the four natural divisions of society: brāhmaṇa (intellectuals/priests), kṣatriya (administrators/warriors), vaiśya (merchants/farmers), and śūdra (laborers/artisans). He explicitly states that their respective duties and actions (karmāṇi) are divided and assigned strictly according to the qualities born of their own inner nature (svabhāva-prabhavair guṇaiḥ), not by birthright.
