Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna lists the nine symptoms of a Brāhmaṇa (the intellectual and spiritual guide). Their natural work and disposition (brahma-karma svabhāva-jam) consist of: śama (peacefulness/mind control), dama (sense control), tapa (austerity), śauca (purity), kṣānti (tolerance/forgiveness), ārjava (honesty/simplicity), jñāna (theoretical knowledge), vijñāna (practical realized wisdom), and āstikya (firm faith in the Supreme).
