na tad asti pṛthivyāṁ vā divi deveṣu vā punaḥ | sattvaṁ prakṛti-jair muktaṁ yad ebhiḥ syāt tribhir guṇaiḥ || 40 ||

"There is no being existing, either here on the earth or among the demigods in the higher planetary systems, which is freed from these three modes born of material nature."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna places a massive cosmic capstone on His analysis of the three modes. He declares an absolute universal law: there is no living being (na tad asti sattvaṁ) anywhere—not here on earth (pṛthivyāṁ), nor even in the heavenly planets among the exalted demigods (divi deveṣu vā)—that is free (muktaṁ) from the influence of these three modes (ebhiḥ tribhir guṇaiḥ) born of material nature (prakṛti-jair).
