Ch 18Verse 39
Adhyāya 18 Shloka 39

यदग्रे चानुबन्धे च सुखं मोहनमात्मनः | निद्रालस्यप्रमादोत्थं तत्तामसमुदाहृतम् || ३९ ||

yad agre cānubandhe ca sukhaṁ mohanam ātmanaḥ | nidrālasya-pramādotthaṁ tat tāmasam udāhṛtam || 39 ||

"And that happiness which is blind to self-realization, which is delusion from beginning to end and which arises from sleep, laziness and illusion is said to be of the nature of ignorance."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Tamasic happiness (tāmasam sukham) is a complete illusion. It doesn't even have a 'nectar' phase. Both in the beginning (agre) and at the end (anubandhe), it is entirely a delusion of the soul (mohanam ātmanaḥ). Where does it come from? It arises strictly from excessive sleep (nidrā), laziness (ālasya), and madness/intoxication (pramādotthaṁ).
