Adhyāya 18 Shloka 4

निश्चयं शृणु मे तत्र त्यागे भरतसत्तम | त्यागो हि पुरुषव्याघ्र त्रिविधः सम्प्रकीर्तितः || ४ ||

niścayaṁ śṛṇu me tatra tyāge bharata-sattama | tyāgo hi puruṣa-vyāghra tri-vidhaḥ samprakīrtitaḥ || 4 ||

"O best of the Bhāratas, now hear My final judgment about renunciation. O tiger among men, renunciation is declared in the scriptures to be of three kinds."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Having presented the ongoing debate, Krishna steps in as the Supreme Authority. He tells Arjuna (the 'tiger among men') to listen closely to His absolute, final judgment (niścayaṁ śṛṇu me) on the matter of renunciation (tyāge). He notes that true renunciation is actually categorized into three specific kinds (tri-vidhaḥ), which He is about to explain.
