Ch 18Verse 5
Adhyāya 18 Shloka 5

यज्ञदानतपःकर्म न त्याज्यं कार्यमेव तत् | यज्ञो दानं तपश्चैव पावनानि मनीषिणाम् || ५ ||

yajña-dāna-tapaḥ-karma na tyājyaṁ kāryam eva tat | yajño dānaṁ tapaś caiva pāvanāni manīṣiṇām || 5 ||

"Acts of sacrifice, charity and penance are not to be given up; they must be performed. Indeed, sacrifice, charity and penance purify even the great souls."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna delivers His final verdict regarding the debate from verse 3. He unequivocally sides with the active path: acts of sacrifice, charity, and penance must never be given up (na tyājyaṁ). They must absolutely be performed (kāryam eva tat). Why? Because these specific acts (yajño dānaṁ tapaś) act as supreme purifiers (pāvanāni) even for the most highly elevated and wise souls (manīṣiṇām).
