Ch 18Verse 3
Adhyāya 18 Shloka 3

त्याज्यं दोषवदित्येके कर्म प्राहुर्मनीषिणः | यज्ञदानतपःकर्म न त्याज्यमिति चापरे || ३ ||

tyājyaṁ doṣa-vad ity eke karma prāhur manīṣiṇaḥ | yajña-dāna-tapaḥ-karma na tyājyam iti cāpare || 3 ||

"Some learned men declare that all kinds of fruitive activities should be given up as faulty, yet other sages maintain that acts of sacrifice, charity and penance should never be abandoned."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna acknowledges that there is a massive philosophical debate on this topic among great thinkers (manīṣiṇaḥ). One school of thought argues that absolutely all action (karma) is inherently flawed and full of faults (doṣa-vad), and therefore every action must be entirely given up (tyājyam). However, another school of sages firmly maintains that certain purifying actions—specifically sacrifice (yajña), charity (dāna), and penance (tapaḥ)—should never be abandoned (na tyājyam) under any circumstance.
