Ch 18Verse 34
Adhyāya 18 Shloka 34

यया तु धर्मकामार्थान्धृत्या धारयतेऽर्जुन | प्रसङ्गेन फलाकाङ्क्षी धृतिः सा पार्थ राजसी || ३४ ||

yayā tu dharma-kāmārthān dhṛtyā dhārayate 'rjuna | prasaṅgena phalākāṅkṣī dhṛtiḥ sā pārtha rājasī || 34 ||

"But that determination by which one holds fast to fruitive result in religion, economic development and sense gratification is of the nature of passion, O Arjuna."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Rajasic determination (rājasī dhṛtiḥ) is highly focused but materially anchored. It is the determination by which a person firmly holds on (dhārayate) to religious rituals (dharma), economic wealth (artha), and sense gratification (kāma). They maintain this determination out of deep attachment (prasaṅgena) and a burning desire for the eventual material fruits and rewards (phalākāṅkṣī).
