Ch 18Verse 33
Adhyāya 18 Shloka 33

धृत्या यया धारयते मनःप्राणेन्द्रियक्रियाः | योगेनाव्यभिचारिण्या धृतिः सा पार्थ सात्त्विकी || ३३ ||

dhṛtyā yayā dhārayate manaḥ-prāṇendriya-kriyāḥ | yogenāvyabhicāriṇyā dhṛtiḥ sā pārtha sāttvikī || 33 ||

"O son of Pṛthā, that determination which is unbreakable, which is sustained with steadfastness by yoga practice, and which thus controls the activities of the mind, life and senses is determination in the mode of goodness."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna moves from Intelligence (Buddhi) to Determination (Dhriti). Sattvic determination (sāttvikī dhṛtiḥ) is unbreakable and unwavering (avyabhicāriṇyā). Maintained through the strict practice of yoga (yogena), this powerful determination is used specifically to control and regulate the functions of the mind (manaḥ), the life airs/breaths (prāṇa), and the physical senses (indriya-kriyāḥ).
