यया स्वप्नं भयं शोकं विषादं मदमेव च | न विमुञ्चति दुर्मेधा धृतिः सा पार्थ तामसी || ३५ ||

yayā svapnaṁ bhayaṁ śokaṁ viṣādaṁ madam eva ca | na vimuñcati durmedhā dhṛtiḥ sā pārtha tāmasī || 35 ||

"And that determination which cannot go beyond dreaming, fearfulness, lamentation, moroseness and illusion—such unintelligent determination, O son of Pṛthā, is in the mode of darkness."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Tamasic determination (tāmasī dhṛtiḥ) is a tragic stubbornness. It is the determination of an unintelligent person (durmedhā) who simply refuses to let go of (na vimuñcati) oversleeping/dreaming (svapnaṁ), chronic fear (bhayaṁ), lamentation/grief (śokaṁ), deep moroseness/depression (viṣādaṁ), and sheer illusion/madness (madam).
