Ch 18Verse 22
Adhyāya 18 Shloka 22

यत्तु कृत्स्नवदेकस्मिन्कार्ये सक्तमहैतुकम् | अतत्त्वार्थवदल्पं च तत्तामसमुदाहृतम् || २२ ||

yat tu kṛtsna-vad ekasmin kārye saktam ahaitukam | atattvārtha-vad alpaṁ ca tat tāmasam udāhṛtam || 22 ||

"And that knowledge by which one is attached to one kind of work as the all in all, without knowledge of the truth, and which is very meager, is said to be in the mode of ignorance."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna defines knowledge in the mode of ignorance (tāmasam). This is a state where a person becomes obsessively attached (saktam) to one single, narrow type of work or concept, treating it as if it were the entire universe (kṛtsna-vad ekasmin kārye). This type of 'knowledge' is completely irrational and without cause/logic (ahaitukam). It is entirely divorced from the actual truth (atattvārtha-vad) and is incredibly meager, narrow, and limited in scope (alpaṁ).
