Ch 18Verse 21
Adhyāya 18 Shloka 21

पृथक्त्वेन तु यज्ज्ञानं नानाभावान्पृथग्विधान् | वेत्ति सर्वेषु भूतेषु तज्ज्ञानं विद्धि राजसम् || २१ ||

pṛthaktvena tu yaj jñānaṁ nānā-bhāvān pṛthag-vidhān | vetti sarveṣu bhūteṣu taj jñānaṁ viddhi rājasam || 21 ||

"That knowledge by which one sees that in every different body there is a different type of living entity you should understand to be in the mode of passion."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Knowledge in the mode of passion (rājasam) is fundamentally fractured. It is the type of perception (yaj jñānaṁ) that views every living entity as completely separate and inherently different from one another (pṛthaktvena). Instead of seeing the unified spirit, it perceives only the myriad of different bodily forms and mentalities (nānā-bhāvān pṛthag-vidhān) across all living beings (sarveṣu bhūteṣu).
