Ch 18Verse 19
Adhyāya 18 Shloka 19

ज्ञानं कर्म च कर्ता च त्रिधैव गुणभेदतः | प्रोच्यते गुणसङ्ख्याने यथावच्छृणु तान्यपि || १९ ||

jñānaṁ karma ca kartā ca tridhaiva guṇa-bhedataḥ | procyate guṇa-saṅkhyāne yathāvac chṛṇu tāny api || 19 ||

"According to the three different modes of material nature, there are three kinds of knowledge, action and performer of action. Now hear of them from Me."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna sets up the next section by applying the filter of the three gunas (modes of nature) to the components He just defined. He states that according to the analytical study of material nature (guṇa-saṅkhyāne), knowledge (jñānaṁ), action (karma), and the doer (kartā) are each divided strictly into three distinct categories (tridhaiva guṇa-bhedataḥ). He invites Arjuna to hear them as they actually are (yathāvac chṛṇu).
