Adhyāya 18 Shloka 18

ज्ञानं ज्ञेयं परिज्ञाता त्रिविधा कर्मचोदना | करणं कर्म कर्तेति त्रिविधः कर्मसङ्ग्रहः || १८ ||

jñānaṁ jñeyaṁ parijñātā tri-vidhā karma-codanā | karaṇaṁ karma karteti tri-vidhaḥ karma-saṅgrahaḥ || 18 ||

"Knowledge, the object of knowledge, and the knower are the three factors that motivate action; the senses, the work and the doer are the three constituents of action."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna transitions into describing the anatomy of how an action actually takes place. He divides it into two phases: the psychological motivation and the physical execution. The motivation for action (karma-codanā) has three parts: jñānam (knowledge/inspiration), jñeyam (the objective/goal), and parijñātā (the knower/the person experiencing the desire). The actual physical execution or constituents of the action (karma-saṅgrahaḥ) also consist of three parts: karaṇam (the instruments/senses), karma (the work/process), and kartā (the doer/worker).
