Aligning Consciousness

Ch 18Verse 17
Adhyāya 18 Shloka 17

"One who is not motivated by false ego, whose intelligence is not entangled, though he kills men in this world, does not kill. Nor is he bound by his actions."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna states a profound paradox. If a person's consciousness is completely devoid of false ego and the sense of 'I am the doer' (nāhaṅkṛto bhāvo), and their intelligence is entirely untainted by material attachment (buddhir yasya na lipyate), then even if they perform the ultimate violent act of killing men in this world (hatvāpi sa imāḻ lokān), they do not actually kill (na hanti), nor do they accrue any karmic bondage (na nibadhyate).
