Ch 18Verse 16
Adhyāya 18 Shloka 16

"Therefore one who thinks himself the only doer, not considering the five factors, is certainly not very intelligent and cannot see things as they are."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Given the absolute reality that action requires five factors (tatraivaṁ sati), Krishna gives a blunt diagnosis. Anyone who looks at their life and considers their individual self to be the sole and independent doer (kartāram ātmānaṁ kevalaṁ) is functioning with an unpurified, untrained intelligence (akṛta-buddhitvān). Krishna labels such a person as 'durmatiḥ' (foolish or stupid), concluding that they are completely blind to reality (na sa paśyati).
