Ch 18Verse 15
Adhyāya 18 Shloka 15

शरीरवाङ्मनोभिर्यत्कर्म प्रारभते नरः | न्याय्यं वा विपरीतं वा पञ्चैते तस्य हेतवः || १५ ||

śarīra-vāṅ-manobhir yat karma prārabhate naraḥ | nyāyyaṁ vā viparītaṁ vā pañcaite tasya hetavaḥ || 15 ||

"Whatever right or wrong action a man performs by body, mind or speech is caused by these five factors."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna makes this formula universally applicable. He states that whatever action a person initiates (yat karma prārabhate naraḥ)—whether it is done through the physical body (śarīra), through speech (vāṅ), or purely within the mind (manobhir)—and whether that action is right and lawful (nyāyyaṁ) or wrong and unlawful (viparītaṁ), these five factors are always the fundamental causes (pañcaite tasya hetavaḥ).
