Adhyāya 18 Shloka 14

अधिष्ठानं तथा कर्ता करणं च पृथग्विधम् | विविधाश्च पृथक्चेष्टा दैवं चैवात्र पञ्चमम् || १४ ||

adhiṣṭhānaṁ tathā kartā karaṇaṁ ca pṛthag-vidham | vividhāś ca pṛthak ceṣṭā daivaṁ caivātra pañcamam || 14 ||

"The place of action [the body], the performer, the various senses, the many different kinds of endeavor, and ultimately the Supersoul—these are the five factors of action."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna explicitly names the five variables of action: 1) adhiṣṭhānaṁ (the place/the physical body), 2) kartā (the doer/the individual soul conditioned by false ego), 3) karaṇaṁ pṛthag-vidham (the various instruments/the senses), 4) vividhāś ca pṛthak ceṣṭā (the various kinds of energetic endeavors or life airs), and 5) daivam (the Divine will or the Supersoul), which is the ultimate fifth factor.
