Adhyāya 18 Shloka 13

पञ्चैतानि महाबाहो कारणानि निबोध मे | साङ्ख्ये कृतान्ते प्रोक्तानि सिद्धये सर्वकर्मणाम् || १३ ||

pañcaitāni mahā-bāho kāraṇāni nibodha me | sāṅkhye kṛtānte proktāni siddhaye sarva-karmaṇām || 13 ||

"O mighty-armed Arjuna, according to the Vedānta there are five causes for the accomplishment of all action. Now learn of these from Me."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna introduces the fundamental mechanics of action. He tells Arjuna (mahā-bāho) to learn and understand (nibodha me) the five specific causes (pañcaitāni kāraṇāni) that are definitively declared in Vedanta philosophy (sāṅkhye kṛtānte) as being absolutely necessary for the successful accomplishment of all actions (siddhaye sarva-karmaṇām).
