Ch 18Verse 12
Adhyāya 18 Shloka 12

अनिष्टमिष्टं मिश्रं च त्रिविधं कर्मणः फलम् | भवत्यत्यागिनां प्रेत्य न तु सन्न्यासिनां क्वचित् || १२ ||

aniṣṭam iṣṭaṁ miśraṁ ca tri-vidhaṁ karmaṇaḥ phalam | bhavaty atyāgināṁ pretya na tu sannyāsināṁ kvacit || 12 ||

"For one who is not renounced, the threefold fruits of action—desirable, undesirable and mixed—accrue after death. But those who are in the renounced order of life have no such result to suffer or enjoy."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna explains the cosmic consequences of the two mindsets. For the person who refuses to renounce the fruits of their work (atyāgināṁ), the universe keeps a strict ledger. After death (pretya), they will absolutely receive the threefold fruits of their material actions (tri-vidhaṁ karmaṇaḥ phalam): undesirable/hellish results (aniṣṭam), desirable/heavenly results (iṣṭaṁ), and mixed earthly results (miśraṁ). However, for the true Sannyasi/renouncer who has dropped the ego, no such results—good or bad—ever accrue (na tu sannyāsināṁ kvacit).
