"And satisfaction, simplicity, gravity, self-control and purification of one's existence are the austerities of the mind."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

The most difficult austerity is that of the mind (tapo mānasam). It consists of manaḥ-prasādaḥ (mental satisfaction/cheerfulness), saumyatvaṁ (simplicity/gentleness of thought), maunam (gravity/silence of the mind), ātma-vinigrahaḥ (strict self-control over roaming thoughts), and bhāva-saṁśuddhir (purification of one's motives and nature).
