Adhyāya 17 Shloka 17

श्रद्धया परया तप्तं तपस्तत्त्रिविधं नरैः | अफलाकाङ्क्षिभिर्युक्तैः सात्त्विकं परिचक्षते || १७ ||

śraddhayā parayā taptaṁ tapas tat tri-vidhaṁ naraiḥ | aphalākāṅkṣibhir yuktaiḥ sāttvikaṁ paricakṣate || 17 ||

"This threefold austerity, performed with transcendental faith by men not expecting material benefits but engaged only for the sake of the Supreme, is called austerity in goodness."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna concludes His explanation of the three types of austerity (body, speech, and mind) by categorizing the intent behind them. When these threefold austerities (tapas tat tri-vidhaṁ) are performed by people with supreme, transcendental faith (śraddhayā parayā) who are completely free from the desire for material rewards (aphalākāṅkṣibhir), the austerity is categorized as being in the mode of pure goodness (sāttvikam).
