Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Austerity of speech (vāṅ-mayaṁ tapa) has strict rules: words must not cause agitation or anxiety to others (anudvega-karaṁ), must be completely truthful (satyam), must be pleasing (priya), and must be genuinely beneficial (hitam). It also includes the daily recitation of spiritual texts (svādhyāya).
