Adhyāya 17 Shloka 14

देवद्विजगुरुप्राज्ञपूजनं शौचमार्जवम् | ब्रह्मचर्यमहिंसा च शारीरं तप उच्यते || १४ ||

deva-dvija-guru-prājña-pūjanaṁ śaucam ārjavam | brahmacaryam ahiṁsā ca śārīraṁ tapa ucyate || 14 ||

"Austerity of the body consists in worship of the Supreme Lord, the brāhmaṇas, the spiritual master, and superiors like the father and mother, and in cleanliness, simplicity, celibacy and nonviolence."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna breaks down 'tapas' (austerity) into three categories: body, speech, and mind. Here, physical austerity (śārīraṁ tapa) is defined. It is not self-torture. It consists of offering respect and worship to the Divine, the wise, the guru, and elders. It also requires maintaining physical cleanliness (śaucam), simplicity (ārjavam), celibacy/chastity (brahmacaryam), and nonviolence (ahiṁsā).
