Ch 16Verse 9
Adhyāya 16 Shloka 9

एतां दृष्टिमवष्टभ्य नष्टात्मानोऽल्पबुद्धयः | प्रभवन्त्युग्रकर्माणः क्षयाय जगतोऽहिताः || ९ ||

etāṁ dṛṣṭim avaṣṭabhya naṣṭātmāno 'lpa-buddhayaḥ | prabhavanty ugra-karmāṇaḥ kṣayāya jagato 'hitāḥ || 9 ||

"Following such conclusions, the demoniac, who are lost to themselves and who have no intelligence, engage in unbeneficial, horrible works meant to destroy the world."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna describes the terrifying real-world consequences of the nihilistic philosophy mentioned in verse 8. Taking shelter of this atheistic, materialistic vision (etāṁ dṛṣṭim avaṣṭabhya), these demoniac individuals become 'naṣṭātmāno' (lost souls) with 'alpa-buddhayaḥ' (minuscule, degraded intelligence). Because they believe life has no spiritual consequence, they engage in 'ugra-karmāṇaḥ' (fierce, horrible, aggressive works) which are fundamentally 'ahitāḥ' (unbeneficial) and ultimately lead to the destruction of the world (kṣayāya jagato).
