Ch 16Verse 10
Adhyāya 16 Shloka 10

काममाश्रित्य दुष्पूरं दम्भमानमदान्विताः | मोहाद्गृहीत्वासद्ग्राहान्प्रवर्तन्तेऽशुचिव्रताः || १० ||

kāmam āśritya duṣpūraṁ dambha-māna-madānvitāḥ | mohād gṛhītvāsad-grāhān pravartante 'śuci-vratāḥ || 10 ||

"Taking shelter of insatiable lust and absorbed in the conceit of pride and false prestige, the demoniac, thus illusioned, are always sworn to unclean work, attracted by the impermanent."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna dives deeper into the psychology of the Asura. Their primary shelter is 'kāmam duṣpūraṁ' (insatiable, unfillable lust). Because this lust can never be satisfied, they become heavily absorbed in 'dambha-māna-madānvitāḥ' (hypocrisy, false prestige, and intoxication/madness). Operating under deep illusion (mohād), they accept totally false, impermanent things as real (asad-grāhān) and commit themselves to 'aśuci-vratāḥ' (unclean, impure vows and habits).
