Ch 16Verse 7
Adhyāya 16 Shloka 7

प्रवृत्तिं च निवृत्तिं च जना न विदुरासुराः | न शौचं नापि चाचारो न सत्यं तेषु विद्यते || ७ ||

pravṛttiṁ ca nivṛttiṁ ca janā na vidur āsurāḥ | na śaucaṁ nāpi cācāro na satyaṁ teṣu vidyate || 7 ||

"Those who are demoniac do not know what is to be done and what is not to be done. Neither cleanliness nor proper behavior nor truth is found in them."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna begins His clinical analysis of the Asuric (demoniac) mind. The foundational flaw of such people is that they have absolutely no boundaries; they do not know what actions they should engage in (pravṛttiṁ) and what actions they should abstain from (nivṛttiṁ). Because of this lack of a moral compass, three things are entirely absent in their character: cleanliness (śaucaṁ), proper behavior/conduct (ācāro), and most critically, truthfulness (satyam).
