Aligning Consciousness

Ch 16Verse 6
Adhyāya 16 Shloka 6

द्वौ भूतसर्गौ लोकेऽस्मिन्दैव आसुर एव च | दैवो विस्तरशः प्रोक्त आसुरं पार्थ मे शृणु || ६ ||

dvau bhūta-sargau loke 'smin daiva āsura eva ca | daivo vistaraśaḥ prokta āsuraṁ pārtha me śṛṇu || 6 ||

"O son of Pṛthā, in this world there are two kinds of created beings. One is called the divine and the other demoniac. I have already explained to you at length the divine qualities. Now hear from Me of the demoniac."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna establishes a binary taxonomy for human consciousness. In this material world (loke 'smin), all created beings (bhūta-sargau) essentially fall into one of two categories (dvau): the divine (daiva) or the demoniac (āsura). Having already explained the divine qualities at great length (vistaraśaḥ prokta), Krishna now prepares to do a deep, clinical dive into the psychology of the demoniac (āsuraṁ pārtha me śṛṇu).
