Ch 16Verse 23
Adhyāya 16 Shloka 23

"He who discards scriptural injunctions and acts according to his own whims attains neither perfection, nor happiness, nor the supreme destination."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna lays down the absolute necessity of following authorized guidance. If a person arrogantly discards or throws aside the rules and regulations of scripture (yaḥ śāstra-vidhim utsṛjya) and chooses instead to act entirely on their own lustful whims and impulses (vartate kāma-kārataḥ), they face three guarantees. They will never attain perfection (na sa siddhim avāpnoti), they will never find true happiness in this world (na sukham), and they will certainly not attain the supreme destination (na parāṁ gatim).
