Aligning Consciousness

Ch 16Verse 22
Adhyāya 16 Shloka 22

एतैर्विमुक्तः कौन्तेय तमोद्वारैस्त्रिभिर्नरः | आचरत्यात्मनः श्रेयस्ततो याति परां गतिम् || २२ ||

etair vimuktaḥ kaunteya tamo-dvārais tribhir naraḥ | ācaraty ātmanaḥ śreyas tato yāti parāṁ gatim || 22 ||

"The man who has escaped these three gates of hell, O son of Kuntī, performs acts conducive to self-realization and thus gradually attains the supreme destination."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna offers the cure. When a person becomes completely liberated (vimuktaḥ) from these three dark gates of ignorance (tamo-dvārais tribhir naraḥ)—lust, anger, and greed—their consciousness immediately clears. Free from these chains, they are finally able to act in ways that are truly beneficial for the soul (ācaraty ātmanaḥ śreyas). By consistently acting in self-realization, they gradually and successfully attain the supreme destination (tato yāti parāṁ gatim).
