त्रिविधं नरकस्येदं द्वारं नाशनमात्मनः | कामः क्रोधस्तथा लोभस्तस्मादेतत्त्रयं त्यजेत् || २१ ||

tri-vidhaṁ narakasyedaṁ dvāraṁ nāśanam ātmanaḥ | kāmaḥ krodhas tathā lobhas tasmād etat trayaṁ tyajet || 21 ||

"There are three gates leading to this hell—lust, anger and greed. Every sane man should give these up, for they lead to the degradation of the soul."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

This is one of the most famous and practical verses in the Gita. Krishna distills the entire complex pathology of the demoniac nature into three root causes. He declares that there are three specific gates leading to hell and the total destruction of the soul (tri-vidhaṁ narakasyedaṁ dvāraṁ nāśanam ātmanaḥ). What are they? Lust (kāmaḥ), Anger (krodhas), and Greed (lobhas). Therefore, any sane person must immediately give up these three (tasmād etat trayaṁ tyajet).
