tasmāc chāstraṁ pramāṇaṁ te kāryākārya-vyavasthitau | jñātvā śāstra-vidhānoktaṁ karma kartum ihārhasi || 24 ||

"One should therefore understand what is duty and what is not duty by the regulations of the scriptures. Knowing such rules and regulations, one should act so that he may gradually be elevated."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Concluding Chapter 16, Krishna gives Arjuna his final directive. Therefore (tasmāc), the scriptures must be accepted as the ultimate authority and evidence (śāstraṁ pramāṇaṁ te) in determining what must be done and what must not be done (kāryākārya-vyavasthitau). Having understood these authorized rules and regulations (jñātvā śāstra-vidhānoktaṁ), you should perform your actions in this world (karma kartum ihārhasi) to ensure your gradual spiritual elevation.
